K-State men’s golf finished at The Clerico on a high note Tuesday, Oct. 20, shooting an even-par 280 in the final round to climb four spots and tie for third at Cedar Ridge Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The Wildcats concluded with a three-round total of 865, 25-over-par, tying South Alabama. K-State finished one stroke behind New Mexico, which took second place at 864. Host Oral Roberts won the tournament at 854.
After tying for seventh following Monday’s play, K-State posted its best round when it mattered most. The Wildcats’ 280 was the second-best team round of the event and helped them finish among the top three in the 13-team field.
“I’m proud of how we competed today,” head coach Grant Robbins said. “We really emphasized the process before the round, and I thought we did a much better job of being committed on each shot and letting go of outcomes.”
Sophomore Oliver Toyer led the Wildcats, tying for 10th at 4-over-par 214. He shot a 1-under-par 69 in the final round and scored an eagle on the par-5 14th hole.
Ville Virkkala also finished strong for K-State. The sophomore shot an even-par 70 on Tuesday to finish at 7-over-par 217, tying for 17th place. Jules De Brauwere, who competed individually, finished with the same total and also tied for 17th.
Junior Fionn Dobbin finished tied for 24th at 9-over-par 219 after shooting an even-par 70 in the final round. His performance helped K-State finish strong after two challenging opening rounds.
Erik Sabelström Holmberg and Octavio Laurent both finished at 10-over-par 220, tying for 28th place. Sabelström Holmberg carded a 1-over-par 71 in the final round, while Laurent shot a 3-over-par 73.
Freshman Oscar Stendahl, who also competed individually, tied for 21st at 8-over-par 218. Stendahl shot a 4-over-par 74 in the final round.
Robbins said the Wildcats improved their focus from the previous day, when missed opportunities kept them from moving further up the leaderboard.
“There were a lot of shots we gave away yesterday, but I’m pleased with the way they came out this morning and just played golf without worrying about the score,” Robbins said.
Oral Roberts claimed the team title with a 54-hole total of 854, finishing 10 strokes ahead of New Mexico. The Golden Eagles also had the tournament’s top individual, Ben Gratzl, who finished at 6-under-par 204 after shooting a 6-under-par 64 in the final round.
K-State wraps up its fall schedule at the Steelwood Intercollegiate from Oct. 31-Nov. 1 in Loxley, Alabama. South Alabama will host the tournament at Steelwood Country Club.
