The K-State men’s golf team tied for seventh at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational on Sunday in Loxley, Alabama, closing its fall season with its best 54-hole score of the year.
The Wildcats finished at 15-under-par with a three-round total of 849 at the par-72, 7,096-yard Steelwood Country Club. K-State shot 2-under-par in Sunday’s final round to tie Virginia in the 15-team field.
Sophomore Oliver Toyer led the Wildcats, tying for third individually at 13-under-par with a three-round total of 203. Toyer opened the tournament with back-to-back 6-under-par rounds of 66 before finishing Sunday’s final round at 1-under-par.
The performance marked Toyer’s fourth consecutive top-10 finish in a stroke-play event this fall. He also recorded the 10th-lowest 54-hole score in program history and tied his best individual finish of the season.
Junior Erik Sabelström Holmberg also had a strong tournament, recording career bests in both his 54-hole score and single-round performance. Holmberg finished at 3-under-par with a total of 213 after opening the tournament with a career-best 6-under-par 66. He closed the event with a 1-under-par 71 on Sunday.
Fionn Dobbin and Octavio Laurent both tied for 46th at 2-over par with totals of 218. Dobbin shot an even-par 72 in the final round, while Laurent finished at 1-over par 73.
Ville Virkkala tied for 50th at 3-over par with a total of 219 after shooting an even-par 72 on Sunday. Competing as an individual, Peyton Smith tied for 73rd at 5-over par with a total of 221.
Head coach Grant Robbins said the team played well throughout the week but struggled to convert enough putts.
“The difference was really putting,” Robbins said. “Outside of Oliver, we just didn’t convert enough putts, especially from 6-12 feet.”
Despite the putting struggles, Robbins said he saw several positives from the team’s performance, including its play on par-3 holes and contributions from across the lineup.
Auburn won the team title at 42-under-par with a total of 822, finishing two strokes ahead of Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech’s Albert Hansson claimed the individual title at 20-under-par with a total of 196.
The Wildcats finished their fall season with a 34-14-4 record through five tournaments, placing in the top five in three stroke-play events.
Robbins said the offseason will be important for the young team as it prepares for spring.
“We have such a young team, but you can see glimpses of what they can become,” Robbins said. “If everyone can get just a little bit better in a few areas, we have a chance to be a really good team this spring.”
K-State opens its spring season Feb. 15-16 at the Hal Williams Intercollegiate in Mobile, Alabama.
