A strong offense powered Houston from the start as the Cougars took the first set 25-23. Houston hit .342 and recorded 18 kills, with Sydney Jones leading the way with 9. K-State fell behind 15-8 but clawed back to tie at 20. Houston held on to take the set, despite K-State’s 5-2 block advantage.

Houston carried its momentum into the second set, using a 7-1 run to take a 10-5 lead. The Wildcats struggled to find consistency on offense as the Cougars kept the pressure on. Houston hit .345 in the set, compared with K-State at .156.

Despite battling to stay within reach, the Wildcats could not overcome the deficit. Houston took the set 25-21 and moved within one set of taking the match.

K-State delivered its strongest performance of the afternoon in the third set. The Wildcats jumped out to a 4-0 start and extended their advantage to 11-5. Addison Massey and Ellah Derrer led the offense as K-State remained in control.

Houston worked its way back into contention, tying the score at 13-13. The Wildcats responded with a Massey kill and a Derrer service ace to regain momentum. K-State kept pulling away and closed the set 25-15.

The Wildcats hit .458 in the third set, recording 12 kills on 24 attacks with just one error. Massey led all players with 5 kills.

Houston regained control in the fourth set, building a 15-9 lead behind its offense. The Wildcats kept fighting, cutting the deficit to 20-17 and giving themselves a chance to extend the match.

However, Houston closed out the set 25-20 to secure the victory. The Cougars hit .385 in the final set, with Jones and Kamille Gibson combining for 11 of Houston’s 15 kills.

Massey led K-State with 18 kills, marking her sixth straight match with double-digit kills. Despite her strong individual performance, Massey said the Wildcats need to change their mentality moving forward.

“We need to … be more aggressive and not get tight and scared,” Massey said. “We need to keep swinging, even if we’re down.”

Massey said she is more focused on helping the team succeed than how many kills she finishes with.

“Honestly, I don’t really care about how many kills I get,” Massey said. “I just want to put it down because if I’m successful, that means my team is successful. But honestly, if someone else gets 18 kills, I’m going to be way more happy because if they’re successful too, then we win.”

Fuka Sekita added 10 digs, reaching 500 career NCAA digs. Sekita echoed Massey’s statement, saying the Wildcats need to focus on their mentality.

“I think in the fourth set and second set they pushed us, but we tried to stay connected,” Sekita said. “But as [Addison Massey] just said, the mentality is more important than skills because we know we have a lot of girls who’re talented on this team, and we already have experienced that against good teams from Houston, now UCF and of course the preseason too. So just yeah, have a mentality to beat other teams.”

Like Massey, Sekita also said her personal achievements aren’t as important to her as team success.

“I didn’t know that I had 500 digs, but I’m just focusing on how I can help the team,” Sekita said. “I think the result is that I just had 500 digs, and of course I cannot have that record by myself because of the blocking and the coaching staff, the scouting report and everything.”

Jones finished with 22 kills for Houston, while Gibson added 14 and Noemi Despaigne recorded 13. Houston finished with a 58-48 advantage in kills.

“We found out this week that the Big 12 is going to be tough every single match,” head coach Jason Mansfield said. “We’ve played two really physical teams, and we can’t get down 0-2.”

Mansfield said K-State needs to compete more aggressively moving forward.

“We got to make plays,” Mansfield said. “There are plays to be made in every match, and we made a lot of them, but we got to make more of them, and that’s really what it comes down to.”

The loss ends K-State’s nine-match winning streak and moves the Wildcats to 9-1 on the season and 1-1 in Big 12 play. K-State looks to bounce back at home against BYU at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 1. The match will stream on ESPN+.
