K-State (3-0)
The Wildcats hit the road for the first time this season to open Big 12 play at Cincinnati, coming off a 31-20 victory over Tulane on Sept. 19. K-State brings one of the nation’s top defenses into the matchup, ranking second nationally in total defense at 182.7 yards allowed per game and first in passing defense at 86.7 under defensive coordinator Jordan Peterson. Offensively, first-year head coach Collin Klein’s offense has been efficient on third down, converting 29 of 43 attempts, which ranks seventh nationally.
Quarterback Avery Johnson leads the Wildcats after making history against Tulane, becoming the first player in program history to throw for at least 200 yards and rush for at least 150 in the same game. Lining up next to Johnson will be junior running back Rodney Fields Jr., with 224 rushing yards on the season, and senior wide receiver Jaron Tibbs, fresh off a career-high 114 receiving yards against Tulane.
Defensively, edge rusher Wendell Gregory leads the Big 12 with 6.5 tackles for loss, while Cincinnati transfer Kamari Burns adds interior experience. On special teams, Cincinnati native Brandon White is averaging 17.1 yards per punt return, while punter Simon McClannan has earned praise from Klein for his consistency through non-conference play.
Cincinnati (3-0)
The Bearcats look to defend their home turf at Nippert Stadium, hoping to keep their perfect nonconference record intact after a 35-31 rivalry win over Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 19. Head coach Scott Satterfield relies on a physical, experienced offensive line to set the tone and control the pace, with All-Big 12 guard Evan Tengesdahl anchoring the group.
Transfer quarterback JC French leads an offense averaging 491.7 yards per game. Through three games, French has completed 76.5% of his passes without throwing an interception. On the ground, Cole Tabb has been a major part of the attack, averaging 11 yards per carry.
The Bearcats showed their ability to respond under pressure against Miami (Ohio), overcoming a 28-7 halftime deficit to win 35-31. The Bearcats outscored Miami 28-3 in the second half, with French throwing for 309 yards and two touchdowns and Tabb rushing for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Tabb’s 53-yard touchdown run with 1:29 remaining gave Cincinnati its first lead of the game.
Defensively, the Bearcats enter the season with a new scheme and a reworked front. Against K-State, they’ll need to limit Johnson’s explosive plays, stay disciplined on third downs and hold up against the Wildcats’ aggressive defensive front.
