Manhattan is a town structured and centered on community. The Manhattan Area Resettlement Team (MART), founded in 2021, began as a beacon of hope for Afghan refugees seeking a safe space in Manhattan. The MART’s mission is to resettle refugees successfully in the community. Christian Watkins is the development coordinator at the MART, where she raises awareness about the organization’s mission and impact.
“In my role, I manage MART’s social media presence, donor relations and grant opportunities,” Watkins said. “This helps to strengthen connections and expand support for refugee resettlement and welcome initiatives.”
The MART also offers various courtesies.
“We coordinate a wide range of services including safe housing, basic furnishings, clothing and access to healthcare, education, social services and employment resources,” Watkins said. “Our goal is not only to meet immediate needs but also to help individuals and families build stable, independent lives and feel a strong sense of belonging in the community.”
The services MART provides offer resettlers long-term support and opportunities.
“By welcoming and supporting refugees, MART helps build a stronger, thriving Manhattan where people from diverse backgrounds can contribute, connect and succeed,” Watkins said.
