While other coaches are signing new contracts with K-State, this one is staying in Manhattan. Pete Hughes, K-State baseball head coach, has signed a four-year contract extension, running through 2031, Gene Taylor, director of athletics, announced Friday. Hughes is in his eighth year at K-State, boasting a .541 winning percentage, with a 230-195 record. The Wildcats also hold a .717 win percentage at home in the last six seasons, with a 114-32 record at Tointon Family Stadium.
Hughes looks to continue K-State’s success, having coached the Wildcats to four straight 30-win seasons, tying a program record. He has been at the helm of some of the most successful K-State teams in recent history, leading the Wildcats to a super regional appearance in 2024, along with an NCAA regional appearance in 2025.
But it hasn’t just been team success under Hughes. Twenty-one individual players have thrived in Manhattan and gone on to play Major League Baseball, with 14 selected in the first 10 rounds. Pitcher Jordan Wicks and shortstop Kaelen Culpepper have been the highest-drafted players under Hughes, both 21st overall.
K-State baseball will look to continue its success under Hughes, playing Kansas in a fall ball scrimmage at 3 p.m. on Oct. 17 at Tointon Family Stadium.
