K-State tennis continued its fall schedule this weekend at the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind., where the team won a doubles title and welcomed back senior Margaret Jaraczewski.
The Wildcats went 4-2 in doubles competition, and 7-7 in singles play throughout the weekend.
Oct. 2 | Strong Start in Singles
Rain pushed doubles play back on Oct. 2, leaving the Wildcats to compete only in singles. Sophomore Diana Smolinska and freshman Sabrina Balderrama both earned wins to open the tournament.
Balderrama defeated Indiana’s Elisabeth Dunac in straight sets, while Smolinska earned a three-set win over Notre Dame’s Esther Vyrlan.
Sophomore Varya Bernovich, senior Margaret Jaraczewski and freshman Marta Leon also competed on Oct. 2, giving K-State a 2-3 record in singles play.
Oct. 3 | Doubles Success
With the weather clearing on Oct. 3, the Wildcats turned their attention to doubles, where K-State’s two duos combined for three victories.
Balderrama and Bernovich opened the day with a 6-2 win over Iowa’s Ida Clement and Sally Xu before defeating Indiana’s Elisabeth Dunac and Hi’Ilani Williams 7-5.
Leon and Smolinska dropped their first match in a 7-6 (7-4) tiebreaker, but responded with a 6-1 victory.
The Wildcats also went 3-2 in singles on Oct. 3. Jaraczewski earned her first singles victory of the tournament after dropping her opening match the day before. She defeated Miami (Ohio)’s Avery Voss in three sets, overcoming a 7-6 first-set loss before taking the final set 6-3.
Oct. 4 | Strong Finish
Balderrama and Bernovich capped their weekend with another victory, defeating Purdue’s Jennifer Florea and Aleksandra Kyselova 6-2 to win their doubles bracket.
The victory gave the pair a perfect 3-0 record for the weekend despite it being their first time competing together.
“Great work by Varya and Sabrina to bring home a doubles title from the event,” head coach Jordan Smith said. “Especially with that being their first time competing together as a team.”
Leon and Smolinska fell to Louisville’s Julie Bedard and Reagan Mulberry 6-4 in their final doubles match.
In singles, Leon closed the tournament with a straight-set victory over Miami (Ohio)’s Nina Chavez, winning 6-2, 6-0. Jaraczewski also finished with a walkover win against Louisville’s Lika Peresypkina.
Balderrama fell to Kyselova 6-1, 6-1, while Smolinska lost to Louisville’s Samaya Smith 6-3, 6-1.
The tournament also marked Jaraczewski’s first competitive matches since October 2025 after she missed nearly a year because of an injury.
“Big shout out to MJ [Margaret Jaraczewski] on playing her first competitive matches in almost a year after injury,” Smith said. “That was definitely a highlight for all of us seeing her fight and play again.”
Smith said he was pleased with the Wildcats’ performance throughout the weekend, particularly as several players saw their first action of the fall.
“Very pleased with our overall performance this weekend,” Smith said. “It was good to get a couple more players into action for the first time this fall. We’re starting to trend in the right direction and hopefully we can push it further this month and next.”
K-State will return to competition Oct. 15-19 at the ITA Central Regional Championship at the Leftwich Tennis Center in Memphis, Tenn. The Wildcats will then compete in TCU’s Battle for the Boot Oct. 22-25 in Fort Worth, Texas.
