On Jan. 30, Catherine O’Hara tragically passed away. O’Hara was an incredibly talented actress who played many iconic roles in classic movies such as Mrs. McCallister in “Home Alone” and Delia Deetz in “Beetlejuice.” But no role was as iconic as her portrayal of Moira Rose in “Schitt’s Creek.”
O’Hara brought a unique comedic energy to Moira that will never be topped. One of the best parts about the character, other than her unique accent, was her outfits. Designed by costume designer Debra Hansen and brought to life by O’Hara, let’s take a look at some of the most iconic Moira Rose outfits in “Schitt’s Creek.”
In season 2, episode 1, Moira wears a ruffled black minidress with fishnet tights that have oversized holes and a fabulous feathered top hat.
She wears the look while she and her family search for her missing son, David. While Moira’s style is mostly black and white, looks like this one prove that it does not mean boring. Her outfits are unique, over-the-top and fancy beyond occasion.
During Moira’s “audition” for the Jazzagals in season 2, episode 3, Moira wears a black-and-white striped maxi dress, a beaded collar necklace and a black asymmetrical bob wig. This outfit screams Moira for many reasons, but perhaps the most eye-catching is the wig.
Moira is known for her wig collection. Mostly in black-and-white, she has an extensive amount of over-the-top wigs that match her outfits perfectly. This particular wig is quirky yet French and brings even more eccentric energy to her Jazzagals audition.
Many of Moira’s outfits have a “Beetlejuice” vibe to them that feel like a callback to O’Hara’s role as Delia Deetz. Moira’s season 4, episode 2 outfit feels especially “Beetlejuice”-y, as she wears a black-and-white striped dress with an oversized black chain necklace, black-and-white wedged booties and, of course, red lipstick.
Red lipstick is a staple of Moira’s look, and most of the time, the only splash of color in her outfit. She wears this particularly chic red-lip look when Jocelyn tells her she is pregnant.
With a dirty martini in hand, Moira’s dress in season 4, episode 13 is utterly show-stopping. During a flashback scene at a Christmas party, where Moira and David sing, she wears an eccentrically patterned black-and-white evening gown, complete with a blond bob wig with a laughably large black bow on top.
This scene gives us a look into what the Roses’ life was like before they went broke. Moira’s style is the same as ever; fancy, fabulous, proving that Moira will always be dressed to the nines, no matter the occasion or financial status.
In the finale of “Schitt’s Creek,” David and Patrick get married and Moira officiates the wedding. In true Moira Rose fashion, her outfit is nothing short of avant-garde: Moira dresses as the Pope.
Mora’s mitre base is made of hair from her own wig. She also wears a long blond wig that makes her look even more angelic. This look is iconic and dramatic, which only she could pull off.
In season 5, episode 4, Moira buys an exquisite and expensive gown, despite her family’s finances, with dreams of wearing it to a movie premiere one day. The gown, a pinky nude color with feathers, sparkles and a cape, is just gorgeous and screams Hollywood.
The gown pops back up in season 6, episode 5 at none other than the premiere for Moira’s new movie, “The Crows Have Eyes 3: The Crowning.” This is a special moment made even more special by the glamour of the dress.
Moira’s wig collection, over-the-top wardrobe and personality are unforgettable. Moira Rose is a fashionable and special character, made that way by none other than the iconic Catherine O’Hara. The world will miss O’Hara, especially the fashion world.
