As the air gets crisper and pumpkin spice floods Starbucks’ menu, fall break nears the corner, which calls for the yearly family get together involving turkey and pumpkin pie: Thanksgiving.
Now, I don’t know about you, but the biggest thing on my mind for Thanksgiving is my outfit — and no one does style or Thanksgiving quite like the 2007 TV series “Gossip Girl.”
Hold onto your fur coats, Wildcats, we are taking a quick visit to Manhattan, N.Y., for some Thanksgiving outfit inspiration.
Some of the most iconic episodes of “Gossip Girl” are during the Thanksgiving season. After all, when you put all those Upper East Siders around one dinner table, drama is inevitable.
No one does style better than Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen. They look effortlessly chic on the daily, whether they’re walking to class at Constance Billard or eating lunch on the Met steps. So, give them an occasion like Thanksgiving, and their looks will be flawless and full of outfit inspiration!
Let’s start off with Blair Waldorf. Blair’s style is classic, preppy and sophisticated. Her fall wardrobe is full of black and white, plaid, pops of color and, of course, her iconic headbands.
One of Blair’s most iconic outfits of the whole show is her season one, episode nine, Thanksgiving look. Blair wears a Beige, Lace Marc Jacobs Dress and pairs it with black heels, lace tights, a Stuart Weitzman clutch, a brown headband and big, bouncy curls.
This look is iconic because it is quintessential Blair, poised and sophisticated, yet refined enough for a family gathering. The styling of the lace dress with the lace tights is genius, and the headband and curls are pure Waldorf.
While Blair is considered the straight-A, preppy, go-getter of Constance Billard, Serena van der Woodsen is considered the carefree, effortless party girl who always seems to be at the center of every scandal. This is reflected in her style.
While Serena does not try as hard as Blair, she is still seen as the “It Girl.” Her hair is more tousled, and her outfits are a bit more flowy and relaxed, in contrast to Blair’s precise and put-together style.
In the opening scene of season one’s Thanksgiving episode, there is a flashback scene to last year’s Thanksgiving. Serena is wearing a green dress, black tights, boots and, of course, her effortless blonde blowout.
But the star of this outfit is her leopard-print pea coat — the perfect autumnal statement piece. A similar one to Serena’s is the “Leopard Brushed Wool Harley Peacoat” from Tuckernuck.
In the same flashback scene, Blair is wearing a plaid pea coat over a gray dress, layered over a purple turtleneck, with brown tights and a green headband. Blair’s style is all about layering!
A coat similar to Blair’s is the “Timeless Topcoat” from Banana Republic.
At the beginning of season two’s Thanksgiving episode, Blair wears a flowy, chiffon, patterned top with a skirt and tights. These types of tops are very trendy right now. A great example is the “Miss Selfridge Chiffon Ruffle Tie Front Top” from Asos.
Later in the episode, she is wearing a green dress, a light blue overcoat and a brown oversized bag. But the star of this look is the brown boots. They are structured yet slouchy, have gold buckles on the side and are the perfect fall boots. A similar pair is the “Collins Calfskin Tall Boot Heel” from Ralph Lauren.
While I usually favor Blair’s style, Serena’s look takes the cake for this episode. Serena wears a red satin top tucked into a very high-waisted golden-yellow skirt, paired with a red chunky statement necklace and patterned tights. This look is stylish, flattering and has the perfect Thanksgiving color palette.
In perhaps the most iconic Thanksgiving episode in television history, season three, episode 11, of “Gossip Girl,” all the Upper East Siders eat Thanksgiving dinner together as many secrets unfold, all while “Watcha Say” by Jason Derulo plays.
On the topic of fashion, Blair’s outfit is superior in this episode. She wears a stunning, golden, patterned A-line dress with a gold statement necklace and sheer purple tights.
The look gets even better when she steps outside, layering on a red tweed trench coat and a matching red bag. These are the perfect sophisticated additions to a fall outfit.
In season four, episode eight, Blair wears an orange-and-gray plaid dress, a brown overcoat and a green Louis Vuitton Alma bag. For a stylish plaid dress inspired by Blair’s, I love the “Moon River Plaid Sleeveless Minidress” from Nordstrom.
Serena doesn’t have a traditional Thanksgiving outfit this episode because she is in rehab. However, she redeems herself in the next Thanksgiving episode, season six, episode eight, with a chic patterned Alexander McQueen dress, styled with black tights and matching black heels.
Meanwhile, Blair wears a gray suit jacket and matching skirt paired with a purple patterned blouse. While both Blair and Serena deliver high-fashion Thanksgiving looks in this episode, it’s Lily van der Woodsen, Serena’s mom, who steals the show.
Lily wears a gold dress embellished with silver and gold sequins and beading, with a black bow tied at the waist. This, surely, designer look is completed with beautiful statement gemstone earrings. These earrings are very similar to Kendra Scott’s “Danielle Gold Drop Earrings.”
“Gossip Girl” is the best outfit inspiration for all seasons, especially autumn. To emulate Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf during your fall break, you will need a chic peacoat, a pair of tights, some statement jewelry and of course a headband.
