Politics are everywhere, often seemingly out of our control, but we aren’t helpless in what goes on in our communities. By participating in our local government and communities, anyone can make a difference; these are my top three ways to start.

Volunteer or donate

Volunteering is a great way to immediately impact your community without being political. There are opportunities for anyone, whether making care packages at a food bank, leafleting for a political campaign or donating to a second-hand store. Finding these opportunities takes a quick Google search; all you need is what you already have: time or something to give.

Write a letter to a representative

Anyone can write to their representatives, whether by letter or by email, by searching the city website for their representatives’ contact information. In a sense, you’re acting as a representative by telling your representatives about what issues are afflicting your community. Politely reaching out, telling them your concerns and offering solutions might incentivize them to make your suggestions a reality.

Check out local service clubs 

Local service clubs are any organization that works for the public good. They include the Masonic Lodge, Kiwanis Foundations, Rotary Club and 4-H. Working with or for these groups can help you find volunteer opportunities, local projects and more to better your community. This helps strengthen community social bonds by promoting values like unity, respect and teamwork, making an impact without the politics.
