‘Latin Night’ in Manhattan

Spanish music brings Hispanic communities together in Manhattan.

Entertainment and fun are subjective across many demographics in Manhattan; however, there is one establishment that has steadily grown in popularity for the Latin community.

Tate’s on Moro is a bar where Spanish music celebrates Manhattan’s diverse Latino population. With a dance floor, dynamic lighting and a distinct atmosphere, Tate’s hosts Latin Night every Saturday.

According to K-State Quick Facts, Hispanic students make up 9.17% of K-State’s student population, despite the institution being predominantly white. Although K-State has on-campus organizations like the Hispanic American Leadership Organization (HALO), students still look for more ways to connect with others over the weekend.

Darleen Ferrer-Stricker, senior in biology, has found a go-to spot in Tate’s, special to her from her very first outing in Aggieville.

“The first time I went out in Aggieville it was with a group of my Hispanic friends,” Ferrer-Stricker said. “It was my first time going out, my first time dancing in that environment. I think that’s why it’ll always have a special place in my heart.”

For deployed military personnel, Mexican-cuisine restaurant owners or Latino college students, she believes Tate’s creates community within its establishment.

Outings on the weekends allow students like Ferrer-Stricker to seek out places with a familiar environment and the opportunity to relate to people of similar backgrounds.

“I know that when I go I’ll always see someone I will recognize, a familiar face,” Ferrer-Stricker said.

Since 2019, Tate’s has brought Latin Night to the community, bringing adults of different ages and occupations through music like reggaeton, salsa, merengue, norteñas and more.

Despite deployment to different military bases, college classification or stages of life, places like Tate’s have helped bring lasting entertainment to the Manhattan community through Spanish music.

“It’s a good way to connect with my culture and listen to music that I like,” Ferrer-Stricker said.
