Kansas State tennis closed the weekend on a high note, edging out Old Dominion 4-3 on Friday and sweeping Minnesota on Sunday.
On Feb. 20, the Wildcats seized early control by claiming the doubles points. The tandem of Martaa Chogsomjav and Maragloo Chogsomjav set the tone, sweeping their opponents 6-0.
Martaa Chogsomjav rallied past No. 98 Victoria Mastova in three sets in singles competition as well, her first-ranked win in dual competition. Varvara Bernovich followed with her first singles victory of the season, defeating Lidiia Rassouskaia in the No. 5 spot.
Freshman Diana Smolinska broke through in the third set against Uladzislava Manzhos. Smolinska pulled away late for a 6-3 decision to clinch the dual.
“We tried to hammer hard on starting better, and obviously we did that on courts one and two,” K-State head coach Jordan Smith said.
On Feb. 22, the Wildcats made quick work of the No. 53 Minnesota Gophers, marking K-State’s first ranked win of the season.
Against Minnesota, the Wildcats once again built their foundation through doubles competition. The Chogsomjav sisters notched a 6-4 victory, while Bernovich and Smolinska added a 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot.
“Really proud of how we played today,” Smith said. “The fact we bounced back so well, took control and never let Minnesota get in the match was really awesome.”
Martaa Chogsomjav’s successful weekend continued in singles, as she cruised through the first set without dropping a game and closed in straight sets. Sasha Kyselova sealed the dual at No. 3, producing a tiebreaker to earn her first singles win of the season. With the clinch secured, the remaining matches were halted.
The Wildcats now have Big 12 play to look forward to, as conference action begins with Cincinnati on Friday, followed by a Sunday matchup against West Virginia in Manhattan.
