The City of Manhattan announced that the Aggieville Parking Garage will temporarily update rates and parking requirements, effective June 1. The change comes in preparation for the reconstruction on Moro Street.
During a City Commission meeting on April 21, members voted unanimously to eliminate hourly fees, ParkMobile registration and nose-in parking requirements. Along with these new regulations, there is a 48-hour time limit on parking.
“To protect that space and make sure people aren’t just storing their vehicles there or parking long term, there’s going to be a 48-hour time limit,” Vivienne Leyva, public information officer for the City of Manhattan, said. “They still have cameras in place and all of that stuff, so that will all be there.”
City staff anticipate impacts on parking rates until 2027 or 2028.
“The final layout hasn’t been determined yet,” Leyva said. “But after updating that infrastructure, they’re also going to update the street and sidewalk, and that’s going to have an impact on parking availability during that work.”
The City of Manhattan acknowledges the inconveniences that may come with the construction, but said it is striving to improve accessibility.
“So to make sure people have easy access to parking during that time, commissioners decided to temporarily waive fees for parking and the registration for parking … but hopefully that easier access will help support businesses during this construction phase,” Leyva said.
In preparation for increased access to the parking garage, the City will repaint all parking spaces in the Aggieville Parking Garage, making them wider, 90-degree stalls.
Once construction is further along, the City will discuss a broader parking plan specifically for the business district.
According to the City of Manhattan’s press release, the plans approved by the City Commission are for the Aggieville Parking Garage explicitly and do not include the Downtown Parking Garage.
