The Wildcats opened the spring slate with a two-match weekend at Billingsley Tennis Center in Arkansas, earning their first dual victory of the season before running into a ranked Arkansas squad on Sunday.
Kansas State started its weekend with a 4-2 win over Tulsa, snapping a brief losing streak versus the Golden Hurricanes and putting the all-time series at 2-2. The Wildcats’ strong start in doubles allowed them to capture the opening point for the second straight match.
Freshman Varvara Bernovich and Diana Smolinska delivered for the weekend, cruising to a 6-1 victory. Sasha Kyselova and Chanel Rustemova followed with a 6-3 decision. Singles play was a grind, with four matches pushed to three sets.
Rustemova sealed the team win at No. 6, dominating in the final frame to bounce back against Tulsa’s Coral Valley. Maragloo Chogsomjav added another point at the top of the lineup, rallying after losing the first set. Smolinska rounded out the scoring for K-State with a straight-set victory in her first dual win of the spring.
The Wildcats closed out Tulsa with a 4-2 decision. This was K-State’s first win over Tulsa since 2022.
K-State returned to the courts on Sunday to face off against an unbeaten Arkansas team. The Razorbacks built an early advantage, claiming the doubles points and forcing K-State to play from behind versus its first-ranked opponent of the season.
Rustemova stood out once again, earning the lone singles victory for the Wildcats. Maragloo Chogsomjav pushed Carolina Gomez Alonso to three sets, forcing a tiebreak in the second set before falling in the decider. Kyselova and Martaa Chogsomjav were in lengthy matches as well that resulted in tiebreakers.
K-State would fall to Arkansas 4-1, as the Wildcats split the weekend 1-1 to start the spring. K-State will return to Manhattan on Feb. 13 and begin a five-match homestand, as it hosts Wichita State at Peakform Sports & Wellness Center.
