Kansas State has had players drafted into the National Football League in 29 of the last 30 seasons. That impressive feat will continue this year as the Wildcats produce two more players likely to be selected in the NFL draft.
Getting drafted is one thing, but getting drafted into a spot where the player can shine and get playing time right away is another. Just in recent years, Jacob Parrish, a third-round pick of Tampa Bay, became an immediate impact starter on their defense. Cooper Beebe, a third-round pick of Dallas, started his rookie season in 2024 and has been the starting center since.
Other players like Marques Sigle, D.J. Reed and of course Tyler Lockett have all been middle to late round picks that have gone on to have great success in the NFL. Here is a look at some of the best possible landing spots for players in this year’s draft class.
Sam Hecht, C, 6’4 300 lbs, Shawnee, Kansas
Sam Hecht has been a two-year starter for K-State on the offensive line and was named to all-conference teams both years. He brings experience to the league, is a great size for a center and is really good at getting to the second level and creating holes for running backs running behind.
Hecht has a chance to come in and start right away for a team looking for a center, but he will most likely be a good depth piece in case of injury. If not right away, the senior from Shawnee should become a starting center in the NFL and has the potential to keep getting better with good coaching in the league.
Round prediction: Rounds 3-4
Potential team fits: Baltimore Ravens, Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings
VJ Payne, S, 6’3 208 lbs, Gainesville, Georgia
VJ Payne was a four-year starter at K-State, coming in and starting a few games right away as a freshman. The senior from Georgia played in 12 or 13 games over the past three years, showing great durability in the defensive backfield for the Wildcats.
Payne has tremendous length for a safety and was also noted as the fastest player on the K-State team. He is physical in the run defense, having made 196 tackles during his time with the Wildcats, including four forced fumbles. Payne is an intriguing prospect due to his size, speed and durability, which helps his draft stock.
Round Prediction: Rounds 4-5
Potential Team Fits: Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, Carolina Panthers
