Kansas State women’s golf is back in the NCAA postseason for the second straight year as they look to get back to the NCAA Championship.
The Wildcats were selected as a seven seed in the Louisville regional, also marking the second straight year K-State has played its regional action in Kentucky. While it’s a different course, the familiar location could be an advantage for the experienced ‘Cats.
“We’re delighted to be headed back to the postseason and returning to the state of Kentucky for a second-straight regional,” K-State head coach Stew Burke said. “This is a great field with a number of elite teams, so we will need to be at our best to advance.”
Since performing poorly during the Big 12 championship, placing 13th out of 14 teams, the Wildcats will need to be at their best. Additionally, Big 12 champion, Iowa State, was selected as a three seed, speaking to the high competition of the regional.
The top five teams of each regional advance to the NCAA Championship, along with the lowest-scoring individual on teams that don’t make it. While the goal is for the entire team to qualify, Kelsey Chen and Nanami Nakashima both had a tremendous season and could be rewarded by moving on if they play well and K-State is outside the cut.
The Wildcats enter the tournament ranked as the 40th-best team in the National Collegiate Golf Rankings and hold the second-lowest team scoring average in history, just a shot behind last year’s team that went to the NCAA Championship.
A lot of familiar foes are in the Wildcats’ regional, giving them a feel for how competitive they will be. The order of the seeds is as follows:
No.1 Arkansas
No. 2 Auburn
No. 3 Iowa State
No. 4 Mississippi
No. 5 Houston
No. 6 Virginia Tech
No. 7 Kansas State
No. 8 Indiana
No. 9 Charleston
No. 10 Xavier
No. 11 Western Kentucky
No. 12 Murray State
Regional action will get underway May 11-13, with teams playing one round each day to complete the 54-hole tournament.
