Despite a hard-fought morning at Wyandotte County Lake, Kansas State rowing faced a difficult outing during the Sunflower Showdown on April 11. Kansas secured a 22-0 sweep to retain the Dillons Sunflower Showdown trophy for the third consecutive year.
Beginning with the 3v8 race, the Wildcats established an early rhythm. However, the Jayhawks took an early lead and crossed the finish line at 6:51.467, leaving K-State trailing by just over 20 seconds. This set a challenging tone for the remainder of the morning as the focus shifted to the most competitive four events.
In the 2v4, K-State battled in a three-boat field that included Creighton. While the Wildcats pushed to narrow the gap in the middle 1,000 meters, the Jayhawks maintained their shell’s speed to clock a 7:32.1. The 1v4 followed with a similar result, as Kansas posted a winning time of 7:24.64 to extend their point lead.
The points jumped significantly during the afternoon’s 8+ races. During the 2v8, K-State stayed competitive through the start, but the Jayhawks’ veteran lineup pulled away to finish at 6:50.279, securing six more points for the home team. The day concluded with the 1v8 premier race. Despite the Wildcats’ effort to execute a clean sprint in the final 500 meters, the Jayhawks closed out the sweep with a time of 6:47.07.
While the final scoreboard showed a 22-0 Kansas victory, K-State will look to bounce back quickly as they head to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, this weekend for the SIRA Championship starting on April 18.
