“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a sixpence in her shoe,” is how the old British wives’ tale goes, offering good luck for a bride’s wedding look. Brides today still follow this as a superstitious outfit guide.
Zendaya’s press tour looks for A24’s new film “The Drama” are inspired by this iconic rhyme. The film hits theaters on April 3 and stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, who play an engaged couple in the dark romantic comedy.
For the Los Angeles premiere of “The Drama,” Zendaya pulled out a special Vivienne Westwood gown from the archives for her “something old.” Originally worn for the 2015 Oscars, when the actress was just 18 years old, this gown is perfectly bridal and deserving of a rewear.
Draped silk and a corseted waist, paired with dangling diamond earrings and her recently cropped hair, make this look ready for the wedding aisle. The ensemble was finished with a pair of white Christian Louboutin, “So Kates” — Zendaya’s stylist, Law Roach, rarely allows her to step out without a pair of these iconic 5-inch heels.
“Something new” has never sounded better than custom Louis Vuitton. At the Paris premiere, Zendaya wore a custom, form-fitting white Louis Vuitton gown featuring a large black bow detailing in the back, adding a twist of drama to the romantic look, just as the film itself promises.
She paired the look with old Hollywood curls and diamond jewelry to match her rumored wedding band from her rumored husband, Tom Holland.
Who better to borrow a dress from than iconically stylish Cate Blanchett? At the 2022 SAG Actor Awards, Blanchett wore a black Armani Privé gown and wore it again to the opening ceremony of last year’s Venice Film Festival.
Zendaya wore the same black structural Armani Privé gown as her “something borrowed” to the “The Drama” premiere in Rome on March 26.
This dress features a plunging neckline, lined with black gemstones, and a fit-and-flare train. Zendaya accessorized with the same pair of Louis Vuitton earrings that Blanchett wore to the Venice Film Festival.
Dramatic eyeshadow and a crimped bob completed the “something borrowed” look, leaving us all on the edge of our seats for “something blue.”
Emulating the aesthetic or characters of the movie in her outfits during press tours is something Zendaya is not a stranger to. These looks are another example of Zendaya’s iconic “method dressing.”
For the Sydney premiere of her film “Challengers,” Zendaya wore a sparkling green Loewe dress that featured the shadow of a tennis player mid-swing, perfectly emulating the tennis-centered film.
At the 2021 Venice Film Festival, Zendaya wore a custom Balmain dress to promote “Dune.” Its statuesque, wet sand-like texture looked as if it had stepped right out of “Dune’s” desert.
Even back in 2017, for the Mexico City premiere of “The Greatest Showman,” Zendaya wore a shiny red Ralph Lauren tuxedo top paired with black pants, looking as if she had rifled through Hugh Jackman’s P.T. Barnum wardrobe.
Zendaya’s “method dressing” perfectly aligns with the films she promotes. Her outfits stay true to the aesthetic of each movie while also being stylish on their own.
With her iconic fashion sense and matching iconic roles, Zendaya consistently delivers effortless, red carpet looks, even in five-inch Louboutins.
