No. 73 Kansas State lost in a 4-1 decision to No. 33 Utah on March 28, at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center, despite securing momentum in both doubles and singles play. The opening doubles victory and first singles point belonged to the Wildcats, but the Utes responded by taking control across the remaining courts. This win puts the season series at 1-1.
K-State’s pairing of Sasha Kyselova and Chanel Rustemova set the tone early with a commanding 6-1 win over Dylan Lolofie and Kamea Medora. However, Utah answered by taking the other two double matches to get the point. The Chogsomjav tandem rallied, but fell 6-4, while Varvara Bernovich and Diana Smolinska lost 6-3.
Bernovich represented K-State during singles competition, accumulating the Wildcats’ only point. She handed Hayler Roberts the loss, winning 6-2, 6-0. In the remaining singles matches, Utah gained the upper hand. No. 121 Emma Kamper outlasted Martaa Chogsomjav in a tightly contested first-set tiebreak before pulling away. Smolinska and Rustemova both dropped their respective contests as well.
Maragloo Chogsomjav split her first two sets at the No. 2 position before the match was halted.
In the No. 4 spot, Kyselova fell short 3-6 in the first set but was locked in a competitive second set, before concluding play 5-5.
“[I’m] disappointed in our performances this weekend,” K-State head coach Jordan Smith said. “If you’re going to be in this league, then you have to want it more; something this young team needs to invest in more.”
K-State will continue to play its final two away matches of the spring, playing No. 21 UCF on April 3, then at No. 34 Houston on April 5.
