Kansas State women’s basketball was in desperate need of a center for this year’s team, and they found one in international Slovenian transfer Ivona Scekic.
Scekic is a 6-foot-4 center and recently played in both the 2025 U18 Women’s Eurobasket and 2025 U20 Women’s Eurobasket for Slovenia.
During the 2025 U18 Women’s Eurobasket, Scekic saw action in seven games and averaged 5.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists. Her highs in the tournament were 13 points and nine rebounds in a game against Greece.
Scekic brings size to the Wildcats that they simply did not have on this year’s roster. Scekic will join other international transfers, Nastja Claessans and Gina Garcia, who are already on the purple and white roster.
Scekic’s arrival in mid-December also allows her to practice with the team during winter break, play in a few games and hopefully get up to speed before Big 12 play.
While Scekic’s ability to score may remain unknown, her size will definitely be a factor around the rim for opposing teams, and her rebounding will help the undersized Wildcats.
Head coach Jeff Mittie had been looking for a center to add to this year’s team after Kennedy Taylor had her waiver and appeal denied just a few days before the season started.
“Thin — it’s as thin as we have ever been [at the five],” Mittie said before the season. “We just have to figure out how to cover it up and figure out how we are going to play that.”
Scekic will have a lot to learn and will need to do so quickly, but Mittie might have struck gold with the international transfer if she pans out.
K-State has an almost completely new roster this year and will add another one with Scekic. However, adding the international transfers brings professional experience the team needs, and Jeff Mittie appreciates.
Scekic’s first game is unknown, but the Wildcats will be back in action on Nov. 15, as K-State faces Texas A&M. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Bramlage Coliseum.
