The Kansas State men’s golf team traveled to Mobile, Alabama, to compete in the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, taking home runner-up.
The two-day tournament was held on 7,239-yard greens, which included a par-71 at the Magnolia Grove Golf Course. The Wildcats finished a final-round total of 10-under par on March 31 to put up one of the best 54-hole scores in school history.
After shooting 274 over the last 18 holes, K-State rounded out the tournament with a 54-hole score of 21-under par 831. It was the lowest since the Wildcats carded 828 in the Tiger Collegiate Invitational in April 2023, and also tied for the eighth-lowest three-round total in K-State history.
South Alabama took back-to-back tournament titles, recording a 26-under par over the three-day tournament. One of the Jaguars’ players also stood on his territory, repeating as the individual champion and totaling a 14-under par over three days.
“I am really proud of how we competed this week,” K-State head coach Grant Robbins said. “The guys showed a tremendous amount of grit, especially after the slow start yesterday. Hats off to South Alabama; they played some exceptional golf this week. We knew we were going to have to be perfect today to have a chance, but we made a few too many mistakes and weren’t quite able to catch them.”
With K-State’s second-place finish, it marked the Wildcats third time this season to place in the top two since September 2025. For the first time since the 2022–2023 season — getting three top two finishings — the Wildcats have tallied five first or second-place finishes.
The team performed excellently, finishing first for fewest bogeys, 36, in the 13-team field. They also managed their way to tie for second in two different categories as well — total birdies with 59 and par-5 scoring -27. The K-State lineup also left the tournament in a tie for first in par-4 scoring (2+).
The Wildcats made major strides this week as five players finished at even or under par. The purple and white lineup was also able to place four athletes in the top 10, including seniors Shea Harmeson, JP Roller and Alex Lindstrom, along with freshman Ville Virkkala.
Harmeson placed second with a score of 5-under par 66 and a 54-hole score of 7-under par 206. The 54-hole score was a career best for Marmeson by two shots. On day two, he went bogey-free and finished the tournament by birdieing three of his final four holes.
Virkkala tied with Roller, who competed as an independent this tournament, and took strides to reach the tie as he moved up nine places before finishing at 5-under par 208. The Finland native recorded a final-round score of 4-under par 68, bypassing a double-bogey on No. 7 along with an eagle during the next hole in addition to five birdies. He is now ranked second on K-State’s team with five rounds in the 60s this season.
Standing as an individual in the meet, Roller had a career-best 54-hole score of 5-under par 208. His previous best of 210 occurred in April 2021 while competing for Texas Tech. Roller achieved this score as he equaled his first-round of 3-under par 68 on day two.
Lindstrom made a considerable seven-spot jump to finish in a tie for eighth place, carding 3-under par 210 along with his back-to-back round of 3-under par 68. Lindstrom leads the team with six rounds in the 60s range across this season, and also administered his third top-10 finish this season to go along with the fourth of his career.
Two more Wildcats — freshman Oliver Toyer and sophomore Fionn Dobbin — tied against themselves, both finishing in 18th place at even par 213, and recording a final round of 2-over par 73. Toyer finished the 54-hole event at even or under par for the second time in his nine outings this season, while Dobbin did so for the third time, including the second consecutive appearance.
K-State is on the road again, heading to Mossy Oak GC in West Point, Mississippi, on April 13-14 to compete in the Mossy Oak Collegiate.
