Winter break is just around the corner, so now’s the perfect time to start planning your outfits for the holiday season, and what could be better inspiration than characters from some of the most beloved Christmas movies?
Let’s start off with the most stylish Who in Whoville, Martha May Whovier. She has countless quintessential Christmas outfits, like her powder blue, fur-trimmed robe paired with an effortlessly perfect blowout and a pearl necklace.
And who could forget when she casually put up Christmas lights in a Mrs. Claus-inspired ensemble, complete with a pair of stylish red heeled boots. One of her best outfits to pull inspiration from for your holiday wardrobe is her Whobilation look.
She wears a red corseted dress that has a dark green skirt. She pairs this extravagant dress with red velvet gloves and a chunky red necklace with matching earrings.
Her earrings resemble red Christmas ornaments — a good dupe being the “RareLove Ornament Dangle Earrings” from Amazon. One of the best parts of this look is her hair and makeup.
She wears a beautiful updo adorned with Christmas ribbon bows throughout. Her makeup is bold with red lipstick and striking green eyeshadow. This Christmas, don’t be afraid to stand out like Martha.
Next, let’s take a look at some of the outfits from the most iconic Christmas rom-com “Love Actually.” In one of the most famous and frequently parodied scenes, when Mark confesses his love to Keira Knightley’s character Juliet, she wears a cream off-the-shoulder sweater from Miss Sixty.
A similar sweater is the “Kylin Sweater Top” from Revolve, which would look great paired with any pair of jeans. She pairs it with low-rise bootcut jeans, a simple yet stylish look.
Martine McCutcheon’s character, Natalie, also has great style. When Natalie and the Prime Minister’s relationship gets exposed on stage at a children’s Christmas choir performance, her outfit does not disappoint.
She wears a bright red off-the-shoulder sweater paired with a matching red wool pea coat. The “Oversized Twill Pea Coat” from ASOS is similar to the one that she wears.
Next, let’s focus on Julia Louis-Drefus’ character Margot Chester, who plays the Griswold family’s neighbor in the Christmas comedy “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” Released in 1989, Margot’s style has a true 80s vibe with big hair and even bigger shoulder pads.
In the scene where Margot delivers the famous line, “And why is the carpet all wet, Todd?” she is wearing a white, oversized sweater layered under a black, asymmetrical dress.
The look is styled with an ’80s updo and glasses with clip-on sunglasses lenses. Asymmetrical dresses are very popular right now. I love the “Marcou Mini Dress” from Princess Polly.
Our last style inspiration is from “The Santa Clause 2,” where Scott Calvin, aka Santa Claus, needs to find a Mrs. Claus. On his first date with Carol, when she takes him to her faculty Christmas party, Carol wears a black dress with red strappy kitten heels, complete with a matching red lip.
Red kitten heels are perfect for a holiday wardrobe. Steve Madden has a great pair called the “Liana Wine Patent.” Over this outfit, she wears a light blue, almost-silver pea coat with a matching scarf.
Warm, oversized scarves are very popular right now but are also timeless. A good one is the “Fuzzy Scarf” from Abercrombie & Fitch, and the “Periwinkle” color is similar to Carol’s.
This holiday season, don’t be afraid to take outfit inspiration from iconic Christmas movies. Whether it’s an over-the-top showstopping look like Martha May Whovier or an effortless “Love Actually” moment, Christmas movies can provide the best inspiration.
