Manhattan’s Sunset Zoo will be brimming with brews at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, during its 15th annual fundraiser supporting the Friends of Sunset Zoo Conservation Team, sponsored by Addair Law.
“I might not be of age, but I am super excited to see how this event plays out,” Austin Gardner, freshman in mechanical engineering, said. “People will definitely come out, I know my family would.”
The FOSZ Conservation Team leads several programs that assist in protecting and researching wild animals, including scholarships for students. Events like “Brew at the Zoo” are the primary source of funding for FOSZ, and enable research projects that could bring more efficiency and correct conservation efforts would not be able to get the financing they need.
The FOSZ Conservation Scholar Program awards three conservation-minded students up to $2,000 each through the Robert Klemm, PhD, Conservation Scholar Award. The award helps college students fund their research projects regarding conservation, which in turn helps the zoo care for its animals. The awarded scholars have anxiously awaited the reveal of the awards after applying in late April.
Tickets are available online for $65 for general admission. No children or toddlers are permitted, and attendees must be over 21 years old. If there are remaining tickets before the event, attendees can purchase them at the door for an increased price of $75. A valid photo ID and ticket information are required at the door. The ticket includes unlimited 2-ounce samples from over 20 breweries in attendance, animal ambassador events, a commemorative beer cup, lawn games and more. The breweries participating in this event range from all over the nation, including Stateside/Surfside from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Molson Coors from Chicago, Illinois. There are plenty of local breweries to choose from as well, including Tallgrass Tap House and Dave & Dani Hard Ciders at this event. There will be stationed booths around the 26-acre park, including appetizers, dessert and taco stations. The Chautauqua Amphitheater will have live music throughout the exclusive late-night zoo experience, and Hy-Vee will also be catering food.
