Kansas State soccer showed great offensive skill as it attacked Green Bay on Thursday night. The Wildcats scored three goals each half, resulting in a 6-1 final score — tying the program record for goals in a single match.
The Wildcats started the first half a little slow because of strong Green Bay defense, but eventually were able to break through. Twenty-three minutes into the game sophomore forward Jo Sees assisted fellow sophomore forward Ryann Reynolds for a score.
“[Reynolds] is adapting very very well,” head coach Mike Dibbini said. “She’s finding the back of the net. She’s scoring goals for us, which is much needed. You know, I think she has some good confidence right now, and you can see it from our West Coast trip to today. So hopefully she’ll continue to do that.”
After the first goal, the Wildcats began to pour it on. Freshman forward Allison Marshall scored her first goal as a college athlete from an assist by midfielder Khaliana Garrett.
“It’s great that they have several minutes from last year, and then we’ve got some incoming freshmen this year that are contributing right away, so these are good minutes for them to prepare for the Big 12,” Dibbini said.
Reynolds scored yet another goal in the second half, bringing the score to 4-0. She mentioned post-game that she felt great about her contributions to the team.
“Big shout out to my team,” Reynolds said. “I’m so glad that I get to contribute to this team, and I mean they set me up for success so credit to them.”
In the span of three minutes, forward Riley Baker and Sees scored the final Wildcat goals of the night, improving the score to 6-0.
Although goalkeeper Murphy Sheaff was not able to save a Green Bay goal at the end of the game, she ended the game with three saves in total.
“I think if we just continue to play the way we’re capable of playing, stylistically, I think that’s a big advantage for us,” Dibbini said. “We saw that tonight and we were able to use our depth as well. There’s a lot of positives that we can take away from tonight. We still got a lot of work to do.”
The win places the Wildcats at an overall record of 2-2. K-State will stay at home to face South Dakota at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
