The Kansas State Wildcats won its ninth game in a row Sunday and now sit at a 17-9 record with a 5-1 record in the Big 12, the best in the conference. K-State made quick work of the Cougars, sweeping Houston in its own home stadium.
Houston put itself in prime position to win in Game 1, starting up 3-0. First baseman Justin Murray homered toward right field in the bottom of the first, and in the bottom of the third, left fielder Ace Reese also earned himself a homerun.
Although Game 1 was quiet for K-State early, a remarkable sixth inning helped the Wildcats complete a three-run comeback. The four-run inning saw the Wildcats continuously get on base. Catcher Raphael Pelletier singled it to left resulting in two runs off a throwing error by Houston.
K-State infielder David Bishop had two runs in the 5-3 win. The win also saw Wildcat head coach Pete Hughes notch his 800th career win.
Star closer Tyson Neighbors returned after a month-long hiatus due to injury, pitching one inning and striking out two.
In Game 2, K-State had a more impressive first inning, earning two runs. Unfortunately, the Wildcats found themselves in the same position as Game 1: down three runs. Houston had four runs in the fifth inning and one in the seventh to go up 5-2.
K-State responded with a four-run inning of its own in the eighth. Third baseman Danniel Rivera and right fielder Nick English both found their way to homebase off errors from Houston’s first basemen. K-State won Game 2 6-5, not allowing another run in the ninth inning.
The first six innings of Game 3 was a slugfest between the teams. The Cougars and Wildcats were neck-and-neck at 2-2 up until the seventh inning when the Wildcats put up seven runs combined in the seventh and eighth innings.
Wildcats second baseman Brady Day, center fielder Brendan Jones and left fielder Chuck Ingram all totaled two runs as K-State made quick work of Houston 9-3, completing the sweep and extending the Wildcat winning streak to nine games.
The Wildcats continue its reign of terror as it returns home to take on Texas at 6 p.m. Thursday.
