Junior Maralgoo Chogsomjav and freshman Martaa Chogsomjav each earned first-round singles victories to highlight K-State tennis run at the ITA Central Regional Championship on Oct. 16-20.
Martaa advanced from the qualifying draw after two wins on Thursday, including a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-3, and 6-4 victory over Missouri. She carried that momentum into the main draw, defeating Oklahoma 7-6, 7-5 on Friday.
Maralgoo automatically qualified for the main draw, which opened up with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Wichita State. The junior also partnered with sophomore Chanel Rustemova for doubles play, earning an 8-5 win against North Dakota. They would eventually fall in a tie breaker to Nebraska, 8-7.
Freshman Diana Smolinska found success in the qualifying draw, defeating Saint Louis 6-2, 6-1 before dropping a three-set ball to Arkansas State. Junior Margaret Jaraczewski went the distance in her opening match but fell to North Dakota 5-7, 6-4 and 3-6.
Both Chogsomjav sisters returned to singles action on Oct. 18, but fell in straight sets: Martaa to Missouri and Maralgoo to Nebraska. Rustemova and Smolinski each posted wins in extra single matches during the weekend. Rustemova swept Missouri 6-1, 6-0 and defeated Oral Roberts 6-1, 6-1. Smolinski rallied for a 4-6, 6-2 and 10-3 win over Minnesota before topping Kansas 7-6, 7-2, and 6-4.
K-State will continue its fall schedule at the ITF Tournament in Sumter, South Carolina, Oct. 27-30.
