Behind back-to-back standout performances from senior outside hitter Shaylee Myers, the Wildcats wrapped up nonconference play with a pair of five-set victories. One of the wins would be the first win of this season against a ranked opponent.
On Sept. 19, Myers delivered a career-high 27 kills to help rally the Wildcats past No. 25 North Carolina. The senior hit .426 on 54 swings. Kansas State would come out on top in five sets, 16-25, 25-19, 25-11, 13-25, 15-10. It was a career night for a few Wildcats, as setter Ava Legrand posted a career best 45 assists while libero Symone Sims put up 18 digs.
“It’s hard to put into words how great of a performance Shaylee had tonight,” K-State head coach Jason Mansfield said. “She’s been putting up insane numbers for us all season, and it’s really special to see her confidence and her belief in herself continue to grow.”
K-State followed up on Saturday by outlasting East Carolina 25-20, 21-25, 15-25, 25-22, 15-10. Myers continued to be a lingering presence, totaling 23 kills. Outside hitter Aniya Clinton tallied 21 and Reagan Fox added 10.
Legrand was right back at it, finishing with 49 assists and 22 digs for her fifth career double-double. It wouldn’t be easy, though, as the Wildcats had to erase a 2-1 deficit, winning the final two sets. K-State put on a stellar fifth set, hitting .550 with 11 kills and no errors.
“We needed to battle after being down 1-2, and we did,” Mansfield said. “So proud of how we competed as the match went on, especially in set 4 and 5.”
The Wildcats put on a stellar fifth set, hitting .550 with 11 kills and no errors. Myers totaled 50 kills for the weekend. Clinton reached double digits in both contests, and K-State finished the weekend with 20 service aces, multiple coming from Myers and Legrand.
K-State enters Big 12 play coming off a three-match winning streak. The Wildcats will host Arizona on Sept. 26 before facing Arizona State on Sept. 28 at Morgan Family Arena.
