Creating an outfit every morning can be difficult when your closet is full of trendy pieces that don’t match and don’t last. While buying trendy clothing can give you momentary joy and satisfaction, it is ultimately expensive and unnecessary because of how fast trends change.
Creating a wardrobe full of staple pieces that you can mix and match, which outlast any trends, will benefit you more in the long run.
This fall, let’s not stress about being trendy by buying the latest top from a TikTok shop ad. Instead, let’s invest in basic autumn staples that will be in style for years to come.
The first item that is always necessary in the fall and is a staple piece is a cardigan. If you don’t have a basic cardigan in your closet, you need one before all the leaves on the trees have fallen. The “Gaspard Cardigan” from Sezane is the perfect classic cardigan and is on my wish list. But a more affordable option, that is just as classy, is the “Fine Knit Cardigan” from H&M.
The holiday season simply is not complete without a plaid skirt. Plaid skirts are and never go out of style. An example of a good plaid skirt is the “Beverly and Beck Plaid Mini Skirt” from Pacsun.
I like to style plaid skirts with an oversized sweater, sheer black tights and black boots. If you need more inspiration for styling plaid skirts, or plaid in general, Blair Waldorf, from “Gossip Girl,” wore many inspirational plaid outfits.
Fall time calls for cute jackets that keep you warm, but aren’t your bulky winter puffer that ruins your outfit. The most timeless jacket options for autumn are a denim jacket or a leather jacket. I prefer a bit of an oversized denim jacket, like the “‘90s Trucker Jacket” from Levi’s.
For a leather jacket, I love the “Slim Zip Vegan Leather Jacket” from Abercrombie & Fitch. They have many different colors, but I think black is the most classic and will match the most outfits.
If you don’t already have a favorite pair of jeans, this is your time to get them. While jean trends are always changing, the perfect pair of jeans for you is what you feel best in. My favorite pair of jeans is the “Low Rise Baggy Jean” from Abercrombie & Fitch. Also, for the fall time, I prefer a darker denim.
For shoes, everyone needs a pair of boots for the fall. A pair of classic black boots can elevate any outfit and last you years. A great pair of black boots is the “Teala Boots” from Princess Polly. The famous Frye boots are also a great staple for fall; they have such a timeless look.
Finally, autumn can not be complete without an oversized sweater. Cable knit sweaters are my personal favorites and never go out of style. The “Frankie Cable Knit Sweater” from Free People and the “Cable-Knit Crewneck Sweater” from J. Crew are great examples of an essential cable knit fall sweater.
This autumn, I encourage you to purchase more basic pieces that you can rewear for many years, rather than trendy clothing that will be donated to Goodwill at the end of the season. For more inspiration on how to style these staple pieces, check out my Pinterest board!
