Now that it is October, we can finally talk about Halloween costumes. Whether you are staying in to pass out candy or trick-or-treating all night long, I have put together a list of inspiration for your next costume.
As everyone tries to find unique and original costumes, classic ones like the mummy, vampire, zombie and witch are getting more rare — I think these costumes are timeless and cool.
Dressing as a witch is easy. All you need is green tights, a black dress and a witch hat. Add in your best friend, a pink dress and a tiara, you’ve got Glinda and Elphaba from “Wicked.”
There are even iconic moments from this year that could be Halloween costumes, such as dressing as an astronaut like Katy Perry during her spaceflight. All you need is a blue suit and a daisy. You could also dress as any Katy Perry look. She has many iconic outfits that would work great as costumes, such as her “Roar” music video outfit or her “Last Friday Night” music video outfit.
Now that we have talked about some dos for costumes this year, let’s go over some don’ts. Barbie, The Joker, Harley Quinn and The Lorax are so overused, it’s not even funny. I don’t want to see any of those this year.
For some more inspiration, let’s look at Kendall Jenner’s costumes. She has become a Halloween costume icon. In 2019, Jenner dressed as a golden fairy, looking stunning. Then in 2023, Jenner dressed as Wonder Woman, looking like she jumped right out of a comic book and proving she can effortlessly nail original ideas and timeless, iconic looks.
Now let’s talk about some other costumes you could easily pull off this Halloween season.
A sequined skirt to mimic scales, crimped hair and seashell jewelry can make the perfect mermaid costume. This costume is not too overdone and can be worn with a group of people or just one person. Amazon has many sequin skirts that scream mermaid scales.
Group costumes can be hard to put together, especially when you and your friends are trying to avoid tired concepts like a princess. Hopefully, these group costumes are unique and easy to execute.
The characters from the movie “Clue” would be perfect for a larger group and can be done with boys and girls — although you and your friends just might fight about who gets to be Miss Scarlett or Colonel Mustard.
Another group or solo costume is pirates. All you need is a cute white dress, which you can find on Amazon, and some pirate accessories, such as a corset, pirate hat, handkerchief and gold jewelry.
Since Disney princesses are so overdone, a Disney villain such as Cruella de Vil could be really sophisticated and unique. All you would need is a black dress, a white fur coat and red gloves. Oh, and don’t forget the green eyeshadow and red lipstick!
The main protagonist of Stephen King’s novel and film “Carrie” is the perfect solo costume for girls who don’t want to spend time putting together an outfit and don’t mind a bit of a mess. All you need is a pink satin dress, a tiara and fake blood.
Next, Fancy Nancy is such a fun idea and could be put together with items you already have in your closet. A patterned skirt or dress, funky glasses, a boa, layered necklaces and a tiara will definitely give those Fancy Nancy vibes.
