Kansas State was in Lincoln, Nebraska, for the Git-R-Done Invitational, which included 12 teams all from the Midwest region.
Alex Lindstrom for the Wildcats finished in first place with a tie at 13 under par, leading the way to the team’s second-place finish. Lindstrom opened the tournament with a 63, which is eight under par, and that score was the lowest of the entire tournament.
Lindstrom finished by shooting two under par in round two and shooting three under par in the final round of the tournament. Nebraska golfer Rudy Sautron shot a seven-under par in the final round to come back and tie Lindstrom for the top spot.
“I am really proud of Alex,” K-State head coach Grant Robbins said. “He was in total control all day and hit some quality shots, especially down the stretch. I am happy to see him get his first Division I win.”
Lindstrom wasn’t the only one playing good golf for the ‘Cats as Oliver Toyer and Fionn Dobbin finished in eighth place overall, shooting two under par for the entire tournament.
Toyer, however, was playing solely as an individual, meaning his score did not count toward the team score, but still represented K-State golf and played well doing so.
Other scorers for the Wildcats include Ville Virkkala, who finished in 18th place, and Shea Harmeson, who finished in 26th place. Harmeson, in round three, jumped up 27 spots in the individual rankings as he shot the team low for the round at four under par and helped to solidify the Wildcats’ team in the second-place finish.
K-State only trailed Nebraska, which hosted the event, in scoring as Nebraska shot an incredible 29 under par as a team and took home first. K-State shot 12 under par as a team and was good enough to keep them above fellow Big 12 school Iowa State, which shot 10 under and came in third.
“Our guys competed well,” Robbins said. “You just have to tip your hat to Nebraska; the level of golf they played was phenomenal. I don’t think many teams could have beaten them this week.”
The men’s team’s next tournament is also the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1.
