Kansas State baseball completed its second sweep of the season after winning 12-6 Saturday with an 11-3 win Sunday afternoon over Missouri State. Starting pitcher Owen Boerema led the way, nearly completing a full game with eight innings pitched on 112 pitches, striking out five.
As Boerema kept the Bears off the scoreboard, the Wildcats gained a small lead early. K-State went up 1-0 on a throwing error in the first inning but didn’t add to the scoreboard until the fourth inning. This time, third baseman Danniel Rivera hit an RBI fielder’s choice to bring in second baseman Brady Day.
The Wildcat offense finally exploded in the sixth innings, snagging five runs. Rivera gained another two RBI off a single as three others brought in a run to go up 7-0.
The seventh inning added three more K-State runs, including Rivera’s fourth RBI. The Wildcat scoring was capped off in the eighth inning with a solo shot from pinch hitter Mason Schwalbach.
Up 11-0, Boerema’s day was ended after the eighth inning as the Bears managed to score all three runs in the ninth inning off reliever Preston Martinez.
With the win, the Wildcats move to a 13-6 record and a 11-2 home record. The intermission from conference play continues for one more game as the Wildcats travel to face the Wichita State Shockers at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
