Kansas State soccer came close to earning its first-ever top-five victory on Sunday but fell short in a 3-1 loss to fifth-ranked Texas Tech.
After trailing at the half, the Wildcats evened the score in the 55th minute when sophomore defender Emerson DeLuca sent a left-footed cross into the box that Allison Marshall headed in eight yards out. The goal marked K-State’s 21st of the season, which set a new single-season program record. This would also be Marshall’s first career goal in Big 12 play.
The Red Raiders regained momentum in the 68th minute, reclaiming the lead. Texas Tech forward Taylor Zdrojewski notched her second goal of the match and 15th of the season. Four minutes later, Texas Tech extended the lead with a goal from defender Macy Blackburn. This ultimately sealed the win, ending K-State’s hopes for an upset.
Texas Tech held a 10-7 edge in total shots, as well as a 6-4 lead in shots on goal. The Wildcats, however, maintained a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Although K-State lost, multiple program marks were created. New records for single-season goals, corner kicks and shots on goal. The team has, for the first time, a .500 or better road record in program history.
K-State will conclude its regular season at home against Iowa State on Oct. 30.
