People can make all the “Wizard of Oz” jokes they want, but a tornado can’t keep K-State down.
If anything, it can only make K-State “Better than Ever.”
That was the theme of Wednesday’s all-university ice cream social, the first since September 1986. And there’s almost no better reason to have such a celebration than for the record-speed at which our campus recovered from the June 11 tornado.
“It is miraculous that in 65 days we have made this tornado go away,” President Jon Wefald said during his speech at the social.
From removing downed tree limbs to replacing broken windows to power washing 70 buildings, the Department of Facilities at K-State has kept its word; campus was nearly spotless by Monday.
The people who have been involved with tornado clean-up for the past 65 days really have a reason to stand tall and proud because of the work they have done.
The students and faculty who saw campus just after the storm can see how far it has come. And for those who hadn’t seen the damage done, they still can see that — in many ways — campus looks better than it has in a long time.
Though Wefald will soon leave K-State, he has left a lasting impression on the K-State family and campus. His example is one that should be followed by K-State faithful everywhere.
It’s a great time to be a Wildcat when we can show the nation that we can come together and recover gracefully from such a disaster.
